If there was ever a clear definition of a gentle giant, elephants fit the bill just right.

What defines a gentle giant? The answer is in the question - the soft behavior and the large size. The contrast between them is what makes this concept so popular and endearing in the eyes of many people. We all know at least one person who fits this description - someone so large and intimidating-looking, a person who resembles a big bear or a wide mountain, but inside? They're as soft as a toasty marshmallow, packed with a sweet sugary topping. You know, the kind of man you don't need to choose the bear over, because he is he.

The perfect embodiment of that gentle giant energy in nature is, without a doubt, the elephant. First of all, they're the largest land animal currently living on Earth. They are roughly twice the weight of the next largest land animal - the white rhino. Elephants weigh over 13,000 lbs, or 6,000 kg. To put that into perspective, it's as much as a fully loaded dump truck or multiple passenger cars. Elephants are absolutely enormous.

But what about an elephant's character? They fit the "gentle" part just right. Elephants are highly intelligent, which gives them a great capacity for empathy. They also have a very developed social nature, often avoiding conflict and even showing care for other species. Elephants are not just stomping giants, they're actually soft souls in a thick skin suit.

  • We had to check this out. We put this exact definition into an LLM and it says, without hesitation, that this is definitely an elephant. So… we guess this meme is right?

    Although the peanut bit is more of a historical circus myth than an actual food obsession, we're sure no elephant will resist a yummy batch of peanuts. It's still a good snack, regardless.

    We took this thing a step further and asked if this definition can also apply to squirrels, and… it still can. Some squirrels really are gray, and the thicc midsection is especially true with winter squirrels carrying acorn-related ambitions.

    So is this meme misleading? We just deem it funny and harmless. And full of cuteness.
